10 quotes to fit with the 10 drawings :)

I found these quotes from famous on the internet,
I think that if you break them down and think about what each one means they all relate to life and/or death and flowers.

final idea thumbnails

I sketched some ideas down for my final idea and started thinking about doing a small book of images of flowers both hand drawn and digitally produced and adding quotes that relate to life and death.

I then thought about using the same initial idea but doing a series of postcards with a digitally drawn image and a quote about life and/or death.

Playing around with a wacom tablet

Using the images of flowers that I traced and drew earlier on in the project I started to have a play with making the images digital and colourful, I scanned the images in then put them into Illustrator and using a wacom tablet I drew round some of them and then added colour.

I looked at the work of this artist because her work and the marks she makes are very similar to some of the images I have been drawing.

Matthew Porter

imgres.jpgimgres.jpg researching artists/designers who use floral elements in their work I came across Illustrator Matthew Porter who has created a children's book to teach them colours using flowers to do so...

I also came across this video made by Matthew Porter for the creation and purpose of his book

FLOWERS!!

I like the idea of using flowers to show life and death because there's a really distinctive difference between the two and a really visually beautiful transformation from one to the other,
So today I started to trace floral patterns from books, magazines ect and started to try and draw them in my own way.

I also started a sketchbook to experiment with colour and materials and used crayons and oil pastels to draw flowers and add colour to them.

REMEMBERENCE SUNDAY

going back to the idea of flowers there are lots of things and messages in flowers for example the poppy is used as a symbol of remembrance to those who died in the war.

I also looked into the meaning of different coloured flowers. (particularly roses)

Death isn't always the end.

I looked at situations in which death isn't the end and there are a few I can think of,
A caterpillar turns into a butterfly...
People who believe in reincarnation believe that when you die you are re-born into something else
some people believe that when you die you continue life in a heaven like place
and there is also afterlife.

Roses

I found out some old photographs that I took of some roses that I let dry out and took some pictures of the dried out ones aswell and put them together to see the contrast of life and death.

I really like the outcome of these 4 images together, I like the contrast of the life and death and I think its a really good visual way to see the difference.

Famous Quotes about life and death

I started to look at some quotes by well known people that are about life and/or death
here are a few of my favourite ones;

Life is the flower for which love is the honey
victor hugo

If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day,
so I never have to live without you.
A.A.Milne

My momma always said life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get.
Forrest gump

Life's a bitch and then you die
Nasir Jones

Its a flowers life.

These images show the dying process of some flowers that I bought,
I took a photograph of them every day that I was at home to see the change in them over time as they gradually start to loose life and freshness. I think that the images of the dead flowers are quite pretty images and the series show the process of life to death really well.

going in the right direction?

I found todays discussion really useful, it helped me to head in the right direction and research things out of the box a little from what I've recently been looking at.

I started to think about life and death from a humans point of view rather than flowers and nature this lead me into the direction of the thinking about the things we do and the things we keep for example;

Everybody has a keepsakes box of things they can't bring themselves to throw away, My great gran kept my birth tag from when I was in hospital and I found out in the discussion that people keep rings and other Jewellery thats given to them by loved ones or belongs to someone who may have passed away, and started to get onto the subject of how that person would feel if you took that special item away from them and the reason they keep it.

The K foundation... Burn a million quid

On 23rd August 1994 pop group The K foundation burned a million pounds cash that was their earnings from their success as a pop group in the early 90's. They claimed that the burning of the money was an act of Art.

This is the perfect example of a group of people who were willing to throw away something that meant  a lot to them, they burnt the money that they gained from their success, this caused a lot conflict between between and became a world famous act, bringing attention from the law and everyday people complaining about that money being taken from the economy, but this reaction describes the feelings somebody would have about something thats precious to them that belong to a loved one who is not with us anymore, its like that special object is the next closest thing a person has to that person and they feel like everything would be lost if were to be taken away.

Gridding layout workshop

I think that todays gridding exercise will be very useful when doing layouts for my final piece later on in the project. I found that it was a good way to see how things look before sticking them down on paper.

Life and death

From the briefing I'd quite like to look into life and death,
My initial ideas are to do with nature (Mainly plants) and animals and other living life
I will be doing a series of images that show the process of a flowers death
